About OpenELIS Global
Introduction
OpenELIS Global is an enterprise-grade, open-source laboratory information system (LIS) designed to power laboratory networks ranging from individual facilities to comprehensive national systems. As a recognized Digital Public Good, it provides a high-performance framework for best laboratory practices and international accreditation (ISO 15189) with zero licensing fees and no vendor lock-in.
The platform serves as both a software solution and a business process framework. It manages the complete laboratory lifecycle—from patient registration and electronic test ordering to automated results capture and real-time reporting—ensuring that data is accurate, traceable, and immediately available for clinical decision-making.
A Scalable Standard for Laboratory Informatics
OpenELIS Global is engineered for maximum flexibility while maintaining a single, robust common code base. Our architecture provides the agility required by diverse laboratory environments without the technical debt of fractured software versions. We address the unique requirements of different systems through flexible configuration rather than custom code, ensuring:
Semantic Interoperability: Native support for HL7 FHIR R4 and LOINC ensures seamless data exchange with Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and national health information exchanges.
Adaptive Workflows: Customizable settings for facility-specific nomenclature (e.g., accession vs. lab numbers), varied patient identifier types, and local demographic requirements.
Broad Analyzer Integration: Bidirectional interfaces for over 50 different clinical instruments, reducing manual double-entry and accelerating diagnostic turnaround times.
Enterprise Security: Granular role-based access control (RBAC), comprehensive audit trails, and data encryption to protect sensitive patient information at scale.
By adhering to the "Hourglass Model" of digital architecture, OpenELIS Global provides absolute standardization at its core while supporting a diverse range of analytical dashboards and data sources.
Stewardship and Proven Impact
OpenELIS Global is stewarded by the Digital Initiatives Group (DIGI) at the University of Washington. Supported by an active worldwide community of developers and public health professionals, the platform has over 15 years of proven impact. It currently supports more than 1,000 laboratories and 18.7 million patients across 26 countries.
Our mission is to accelerate health outcomes by providing effective digital tools that empower health workers and decision-makers to deliver data-driven, patient-centered care.
